Nationally, drug overdose deaths have fallen for three consecutive years. CDC provisional data released in mid-2026 estimate about 69,147 overdose deaths for the 12 months ending in January 2026, a 13.2 percent decline from the year before and the steepest sustained drop the country has recorded.

California’s Good Samaritan law (AB 472) protects people who call for help at the scene of an overdose from arrest or prosecution for low-level drug possession, and a separate state law shields anyone who administers naloxone in good faith from civil liability.
