How NA Works in Carmichael
If childcare worries have been keeping you from attending an NA meeting, Carmichael may have the solution for you. Some meetings in and around Carmichael are marked children welcome, and the finder above shows which ones.
Note that this means a child may come with you. It doesn’t mean childcare is provided or that anyone will supervise your child.
Everything else about NA is straightforward. It costs nothing. It is run by its own members. There’s no form to fill out, no referral to obtain, and no waiting list.
The only requirement is a desire to stop using drugs. Meetings in and around Carmichael are held in person, but the finder also lists online meetings nearby.
- NA area: Meetings in and around Carmichael are supported by the American River Area of Narcotics Anonymous. This Sacramento area fellowship offers a 24-hour helpline 1-800-600-4673
- Meeting formats nearby: Open, discussion, and children welcome
How to Find a Meeting Near Carmichael
Carmichael is located in Sacramento County. You can enter an address or a ZIP code such as 95608, 95609, or 95841, and the finder will show you every meeting within that radius.
For an unincorporated community that borders half a dozen others, that is exactly the kind of search results you want. A Carmichael search will include groups in Arden-Arcade, Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, and Del Paso Manor, along with Rancho Cordova across the American River.
Meeting formats in and around Carmichael include:
- Open meetings, which anyone may attend, including family members and friends
- Discussion meetings, where the group talks through a topic instead of hearing one speaker
- Children welcome meetings, where a child may come along with a parent or guardian
Neighboring towns add more options. Some Citrus Heights and Fair Oaks groups are also open to children. Citrus Heights has Basic Text and step study meetings, where the group reads from NA’s Basic Text or works through one of the 12 steps. You can also widen the radius or browse the California directory to find more of these options.
If you’d rather speak to a person, the American River Area helpline answers 24 hours a day at 1-800-600-4673 (1-800-600-HOPE). You can also text a city name or ZIP code to get meeting information.
Substance Use in Sacramento County
Fentanyl deaths in Sacramento County have fallen well below their 2023 peak. The national count has also declined three years running. The county total is still in the hundreds each year, so the decline is an improvement rather than a finish line.
- Fentanyl-related deaths in Sacramento County peaked at 406 in 2023 and fell to about 280 in 2024, a decline of roughly 31 percent. Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, reported November 2024 and September 2025.
- Nationally, drug overdose deaths fell for a third straight year in 2025, to 69,973, down almost 14 percent from 81,313 in 2024. CDC, National Center for Health Statistics, provisional data, released May 2026.
These are county and national figures. City overdose data is not published for Carmichael or the other unincorporated communities of Sacramento County.
Beyond Meetings: Treatment Near Carmichael
Meetings and clinical care offer two different types of support, and plenty of people take advantage of both at once.
Outpatient counseling involves scheduled sessions while you live at home. An intensive outpatient program offers several longer sessions a week. Residential treatment requires a stay at a facility.
Withdrawal management, often called detox, is short-term medical supervision while a drug leaves the body. This phase is a starting point rather than a course of treatment on its own.
Medication for opioid use disorder, meaning methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone, is the standard of care for opioid use disorder. It works alongside NA rather than in competition with it, and many NA members are taking one of these medications.
The state’s licensed narcotic treatment program directory does not list any methadone clinics in Carmichael. The nearest licensed programs are in Sacramento. Buprenorphine is prescribed more widely, including in ordinary primary care, so it is often available closer to home.
WellSpace Health, a federally qualified health center whose Arden-Arcade Community Health Center sits on Marconi Avenue just west of Carmichael, offers medically managed withdrawal management in a residential setting. The center also offers residential rehabilitation, outpatient treatment and medication assisted treatment.
If you’re not sure where to start you can call one of two numbers. Sacramento County Behavioral Health Screening and Coordination answers at (916) 875-1055 or toll-free (888) 881-4881, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They can route you to county-funded assessment and treatment. The SAMHSA National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free and confidential, 24 hours a day.
There’s also FindTreatment.gov which lets you filter licensed programs by ZIP code and by what they accept for payment.
Overdose Prevention and Naloxone
Naloxone is an opioid reversal medicaiton that causes no harm if it turns out the person didn’t take opioids. That makes it worth keeping at home, particularly in a household where someone uses opioids or takes prescribed opioid medication.
California Health and Safety Code section 11376.5 gives limited protection from prosecution for simple drug possession to a person who calls for help at a suspected overdose, so make the call.
Two naloxone resources are available in Carmichael.
- Sacramento County: Get free naloxone by calling (916) 875-2050 or through SaferSacramento.com.
- California pharmacies: Naloxone is sold over the counter without a prescription, and the state’s own CalRx brand dropped to $19 per two-dose carton on 1 January 2026. Office of the Governor of California, December 2025.
The Sacramento page provides the fuller county picture. That page also offers the Sacramento County Opioid Coalition’s free naloxone order form and its map of free naloxone and NaloxBox locations.

Questions People Ask About Carmichael Meetings
Are there NA meetings in Carmichael?
Yes. The finder above lists meetings in Carmichael itself, and because it searches by proximity it also lists groups in nearby Arden-Arcade, Fair Oaks, Citrus Heights, Del Paso Manor and Rancho Cordova. Searching 95608, 95609 or 95841 shows current times and locations for all of these cities.
Can I bring my children to a meeting?
At some meetings, yes. Groups in and around Carmichael that are marked as “children welcome” allow a child to attend with a parent or guardian. This doesn’t mean someone at the meeting will supervise your child, so you should plan on keeping them with you. Each group sets its own practice, and a quick call to the NA helpline at 1-800-600-4673 before you go is the best way to check.
Can a family member or friend attend with me?
They can come to an open meeting with you. Open meetings are available to anyone, including family members, friends and people who are simply curious about how NA works. Closed meetings are reserved for people seeking recovery from their own drug use. The finder labels which meeting is which type.
Are NA meetings free?
Yes. NA charges no dues or fees. A basket is passed for voluntary contributions that cover rent, coffee and literature, and nobody checks whether you put anything in it. Newcomers are not expected to contribute at all.
What happens at a first meeting?
Someone reads an opening, the group usually welcomes anyone attending for the first time, and then members take turns sharing. You are never required to speak, and saying that you are only there to listen is common and accepted.
Most meetings run about an hour. Arriving a few minutes early gives you a chance to talk to whoever is orgnizing the meeting, which is also when you can ask about bringing a child.
