South San Francisco sits south of the San Francisco metro area along the shores of San Francisco Bay. With a population of just under 65,000, this small town in San Mateo County offers a handful of Narcotics Anonymous groups throughout the week. 

The number is enough to settle on a regular home group without leaving town. However, some nights don’t offer as many meetings as others.

San Francisco to the north or San Jose to the south offer a wider spread of times and formats. Both are under an hour’s Drive, which helps when the local calendar doesn’t offer a meeting that fits your needs or your schedule.

What Happens in South San Francisco Meetings?

Narcotics Anonymous meetings are structured similarly throughout the United States. There are two meeting categories under which there are several formats. First, a meeting is classified as being open or closed. 

An open meeting welcomes anyone who wants to know more about the program, including your family members who may want to know more about what you’re going through. A closed meeting is only for people who have struggles with drugs and want to quit. 

In these categories there are several formats. A speaker meeting has one person sharing their story throughout the meeting. A discussion meeting opens the floor up to questions and discussions on a predetermined topic and a step study group works through the 12 steps together, often with the help of a sponsor. 

When you arrive at a meeting you don’t have to talk. No one will ask your name or ask when you’re coming back. A first-timer can sit, listen and leave. There’s no cost to attend, no sign up sheet and no requirements to be clean. 

Narcotics Anonymous fellowship groups are supported entirely on voluntary contributions from the people in the room but no one in the room is required to give.

Getting to a Meeting in South San Francisco

South San Francisco is a working town built around industry, biotech and the airport corridor. Residential areas are tucked into the hills above the town. Although most people use a car, the area has significant public transit available so that you can find the meeting within walking distance of a station.
