Substance Use in Sacramento County

Overdose deaths are falling, and deaths involving opioids are declining even faster.  In Sacramento County, the local numbers are reported specifically as fentanyl related deaths, giving you a good sense of what is actually happening on the ground and, importantly, those numbers have fallen for two years in a row.

These numbers reflect national and county-level figures because Sacramento County does not publish city-level overdose numbers for suburbs, including Folsom. 

Getting Treatment In and Around Folsom

Treatment for opioid use disorder is organized in levels of care.  Outpatient counseling means scheduled sessions while you live at home. Intensive outpatient means several sessions a week. Withdrawal management, often called detox, is short-term medical supervision through the period when a substance leaves the body. Residential treatment means staying at a program for several weeks.

As people’s needs change, so do their levels of care, with NA meetings offering another source of support.

Three medications are approved in the United States to treat opioid use disorder: methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone. SAMHSA describes these medications, combined with counseling and behavioral therapies, as effective treatment for opioid use disorder.

They work alongside NA rather than in competition with it, and plenty of people attend meetings and take one of these medications at the same time.

Methadone is dispensed through federally certified opioid treatment programs. However, the state’s licensed narcotic treatment program directory lists none in Folsom. The nearest are in Sacramento and Roseville. Buprenorphine and naltrexone can be prescribed in an ordinary medical office, which helps to widen where treatment can begin.

WellSpace Health is the nearest community provider that covers the full range of services.  It’s a federally qualified health center operating in more than 30 neighborhoods across the greater Sacramento region. The behavioral health program at WellSpace Health includes outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient care, residential rehabilitation, medically managed withdrawal management and medication-assisted treatment. Sacramento County Behavioral Health Services Screening and Coordination is a county-funded service that answers at (916) 875-1055 or toll-free (888) 881-4881, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There, you can get assessed and routed to a program that meets your unique needs.

To compare options yourself, FindTreatment.gov lets you filter by level of care and by distance from a Folsom ZIP code. This is worth doing early, since withdrawal management beds and methadone dosing sites are less common than outpatient care. Another option is the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357, which is free, confidential and staffed 24/7.

Where to Get Naloxone Near Folsom

For anyone who uses drugs or is close to someone who does, having access to naloxone, the medication that reverses an opioid overdose, can mean the difference between life and death.

If there is a suspected overdose, always call 911 and give naloxone if you have it.  Giving naloxone will not cause any harm if it is given even when opioids are not involved in the overdose. Additionally, under the California Health and Safety Code section 11376.5, a person who seeks emergency help for an overdose has limited protection from prosecution for simple drug possession, so calling is the right move.

NA Meetings in Folsom: Questions and Answers

Is there a difference between an open and a closed NA meeting?

An open meeting is open to anyone, including family members, friends, students and people who are still deciding whether NA is for them. On the other hand, a closed meeting is limited to people who use drugs or who think they may have a problem with drugs.

Both formats are offered in Folsom, but be sure to check the format label before you go. If you are attending for the first time, an open meeting is the best first step.

What can I expect at a speaker meeting?

One member tells their own story for most of the hour, usually covering what using was like, what changed and what life looks like now. Public transit reaches Folsom directly. The SacRT Gold Line light rail runs east from downtown Sacramento and ends at Historic Folsom station, so meetings within walking distance of that end of the line are reachable by train.

Is there a charge to attend an NA meeting?

Yes. NA has no dues or fees and you don’t need to pay to attend. Under NA’s Seventh Tradition of being self-supporting. A basket is usually passed during the meeting for voluntary contributions that cover rent, coffee and literature.  Nobody is required to give anything, and no one is turned away for giving nothing.

Is NA a religious program?

No. NA describes itself as a spiritual program and is open to people of any religion and to people with none. Each member defines this for themselves. This could be the group itself, a set of principles or nothing supernatural at all.

Groups are not affiliated with any denomination, even when a meeting rents space in a church.
