greene county missouri opioid funds

Greene County in Missouri plans to move opioid settlement funds into local programs after county leaders approved six awards totaling $257,822. The money comes from national opioid settlements with drug distributors and pharmacy chains. The money goes to prevention, treatment and recovery for opioid addiction.

To be sure, Missouri offers a wealth of existing care even at the grassroots level through Narcotics Anonymous. The funds can strengthen those six programs up to $50,000. Greene County is one of 98 Missouri counties participating in settlements that could bring as much as $900 million to Missouri and participating local governments over 18 years.

Opioid Settlement Funds Coming In

The six funded organizations cover different points in the same system. NAMI Southwest Missouri will expand the NAMI Recovery Connections Initiative for people and families affected by mental illness. Greene County Treatment Court will offer medication-assisted treatment and integrate it into the court program.

Springfield Victory Mission will house men in its shelter, transitional shelter and Restoration Program. Community Partnership of the Ozarks will fund the Greene County Medication Safety Initiative, including Generation Rx prevention programming, naloxone response training that was previously cut and distribution of medication and overdose reversal resources.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield aims to expand substance misuse prevention through SMART Moves and Positive Action programs and the Risdal Family Teen Center. Good Dads will fund Recovery and Restoration for Good Dads for parenting and conflict-resolution classes plus transportation assistance, childcare and meals for fathers and couples affected by addiction.

Taken together, the opioid settlement funds touch prevention, treatment court, recovery housing and family services in one county budget.

The Opioid Crisis in The Show-Me State

More than 24,600 Missourians have died from drug overdoses since 2000. In 2023, Missouri hit almost 2,000 deaths, with opioids involved in 70% of the cases.

Those numbers represent lives lost and families devastated. As a result, naloxone response training targets overdoses as they strike. Prevention programs aimed at teens slow initiation before they get hooked.
