Drug Use and Overdose in Palm Beach County

Overdose deaths have been falling. An estimated 69,973 people died of a drug overdose in the United States in 2025. This number is down almost 14% from the 81,313 estimated in 2024 and the third consecutive annual decline. This data is according to provisional information from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

The county’s numbers need an explanation to make sense. Florida’s medical examiners report two counts for each drug. The first is how many deaths the drug was identified in and the second is how many deaths the examiner determined the drug caused. These two counts are different and are found in the Florida Medical Examiner’s Commission, 2024 Annual Report.

• 227 deaths in Palm Beach County in 2024 were caused by fentanyl. This was identified in 264 deaths, making it the leading cause of drug deaths in the county.
• 278 deaths in the county in 2024 had cocaine identified. This was more than any other drug including fentanyl. However, cocaine was determined to have caused 122 of those deaths.  
• 49 deaths had methamphetamine identified, of which 19 were determined to have been caused by it.  

These are numbers from the county. Palm Beach County is Medical Examiner District 15. The district figures are county figures. Florida reports counts by drug rather than a single county total for all deaths related to drugs. The counts per drug cannot be added together because one death can involve more than one substance. The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County also publishes an overdose surveillance dashboard for more current local reporting.

Practically speaking, stimulants are the larger part of the local picture. However, fentanyl is still responsible for the most deaths in the area. The CDC has documented illegally made fentanyl being mixed into cocaine, methamphetamine and counterfeit pills. This is why you should carry naloxone even when you don’t think you’re using opioids.

Treatment Options In and Near West Palm Beach

NA is a support and fellowship program that helps you learn new coping skills and promotes sobriety. However, it is not a treatment program. Many people in the area use both during their recovery journey.
