Narcotics Anonymous is a free, peer-led fellowship of people who help each other stop using drugs and maintain their recovery. There are no dues, membership forms or no clinical intake to participate.

Overdose Trends in Palm Beach County

Florida’s drug death numbers fell statewide in 2024, with the medical examiners identifying drugs in 12,687 deaths that year, 2,111 fewer than the year before. A majority of those deaths were fentanyl related.

Palm Beach County is Medical Examiner District 15 in its entirety.

• 227 deaths in Palm Beach County in 2024 that the medical examiner determined were caused by fentanyl. Fentanyl was identified in 264 deaths in the county, which is the broader count of deaths in which it was present. The Palm Beach County figure is county-level, not city-level. Florida publishes drug deaths by medical examiner district and by drug, so there is no single published total for all drug-related deaths in the county, and no city-level figure for Boca Raton.

Treatment and Medication Options Near Boca Raton

It is not uncommon for someone in NA to also be in clinical treatment at the same time. In fact, the two are built to work together rather than to compete.

Clinical treatment spans several levels, including medically supervised withdrawal management, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, standard outpatient and aftercare once a program is completed. Determining the right level of care is a clinical question that depends on what substance is being used, how long it’s been used  and any other co-occurring physical or mental health problems.

For opioid use disorder, medication is the evidence-based standard of care. Methadone is dispensed through certified opioid treatment programs, whereas buprenorphine and naltrexone can be prescribed in ordinary outpatient settings. Using medication- assisted treatment does not mean that someone can not participate in NA. The fellowship’s only membership requirement is a desire to stop using, and what form of treatment a person uses is a matter for them and their prescriber.

Where to Get Naloxone Near Boca Raton

Carrying naloxone can save a life and giving it to someone who turns out not to be overdosing on opioids does no harm.

There are two routes to obtain it in  Boca Raton:

Calling 911 for a suspected overdose is protected in Florida. Under section 893.21, Florida Statutes, a person acting in good faith who seeks medical help for someone experiencing a drug-related overdose cannot be arrested, charged or prosecuted for drug possession or paraphernalia where the evidence came from seeking that help. The same protection applies to a person seeking help for their own overdose.

Are there NA meetings in Boca Raton?

Is NA religious?

No. NA is not affiliated with any religion, church or denomination, and it does not ask anyone to adopt a belief. While the steps refer to a higher power, members are free to define that however they want. This may be as the group itself, the fellowship or nothing supernatural at all. In fact, people who are atheist or agnostic attend NA and work the steps.

Can a family member come with me?

It depends on the meeting. Open meetings welcome anyone, including family members, partners and friends who want to understand NA and how it works. How do I get to a meeting without a car?

Asking for a ride to a meeting is common in NA, and members in the area will often know who is driving from your part of town. Because the finder crosses city lines, the closest meeting may be in a neighboring city that is an easier trip than somewhere across Boca Raton.

Do I have to stop using before I go?

No. NA asks only for a desire to stop using and some people will attend their first meeting still using. What matters is not disrupting the meeting for everyone else.

Be aware, if you are physically dependent on substances such as opioids, benzodiazepines or alcohol and suddenly stop using, it can be dangerous. So, before you stop, speak with a clinician about withdrawal and supervised options before you stop cold.

Does NA work alongside methadone or buprenorphine?

Yes. Nothing about attending an NA meeting requires stopping a prescribed medication. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using. Opinions on medication vary from member to member and from group to group, so you may hear more than one view in the room. Decisions about using evidence-based medications like methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone belong between you and your medical provider.
