The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics estimates 69,147 U.S. overdose deaths for the 12 months ending in January 2026, a 13.2% drop from the year before. Texas follows the same pattern: the state recorded 4,980 drug overdose deaths in 2024, a rate roughly a third below the national average.

Locally, San Antonio’s Metropolitan Health District reported 179 opioid-related deaths in Bexar County in 2024, down from a high of 269 in 2022.
