What an NA Meeting Is Like

If this is your first NA meeting, you’re probably wondering what to expect. Here are some things to know before you take this first important step.

An NA meeting is a free peer gathering, not treatment. Meetings are categorized as open or closed.  Open meetings welcome anyone curious, family included. In contrast, a closed meeting is for people who want to stop using. Meetings are also held in different formats, including speaker meetings, discussion meetings and step study groups. Speaker meetings feature one person sharing their personal recovery story. A discussion meeting opens the floor to the group to discuss a topic. A step study group works through the 12 steps together over time.

You don’t need a specific amount of clean time to attend; in fact, some people come to meetings still using and looking for support. You won’t be required to speak unless you want to and there aren’t any fees to attend. It’s not uncommon for a first timer to just come in, sit, listen and leave without saying anything. Meetings are also laid back, with people arriving late or leaving early without anyone thinking much of it.
