Grand Rapids sits at the intersection of I-96, I-196, and state routes 131 and 21. The city is roughly 30 minutes from the coast of Lake Michigan on the west side of the state. 

Grand Rapids has a full weekly schedule of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings in different parts of the city rather than concentrated in one area. A variety of formats are also available, from open to closed groups and speaker, discussion and step study meetings. 

Open groups welcome anyone interested in Narcotics Anonymous while closed groups are available only to people who want to stop using. Newcomers can usually find more than one option from which to choose.

What Happens at a Narcotics Anonymous Meeting?

Narcotics Anonymous is a free peer fellowship program and not a treatment option. It has a low barrier to receiving support, including no attendance, no fees and nobody has to speak. Newcomers are welcome at open meetings. 

Whether you choose an open or closed meeting, there are also several formats to consider. At a speaker meeting, one person shares their experience with drug abuse and recovery. Discussion meetings are open conversations in the group around a singular topic and a step study works through NA’s 12 steps in order, often with the guidance of a sponsor. 

No one asks you how long you’ve been clean and you can come in and leave without saying anything. Other support group options also exist when you’re looking for a different structure or when family members are looking for a meeting to help support their challenges.

Getting to a Meeting in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids has a population of roughly 200,000. It’s the second largest city in the state and the largest on the west side of Michigan. People come from smaller towns across Kent County that don’t have local NA groups. Because the city has limited public transportation, a car is the most practical way to reach a meeting. 

Online Narcotics Anonymous meetings can fill the gaps on days or evenings when there isn’t an in-person group meeting that fits your schedule. Online meetings are a reasonable way to continue your recovery routine while traveling or when the local schedule doesn’t meet your needs.

A Meeting May Not Be Enough

Narcotics Anonymous meetings help you stay clean once you are stable. However, suddenly stopping opioids or benzodiazepines can trigger serious withdrawal symptoms and dangerous medical complications. 

Your tolerance drops quickly even after a short break. This is when many overdoses can happen. Before stopping drug use you should have an evaluation with a doctor familiar with addiction medicine. 

Medically supervised detox is built to reduce your withdrawal symptoms and protect your physical health. Medically supervised treatment may include medication for opioid use disorder. These can include methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone. 

These are legitimate medical options and are compatible with attending meetings. Medication treatment and Narcotics Anonymous are not mutually exclusive but are complementary.
