Save a Life (To)Day
Save a Life Day enters its seventh year and is organized around one idea: every life is worth saving. This year, organizers mapped more than 750 free naloxone events across the country with locations listed at savealife.day.
Last year’s results show the scale of the movement. Communities handed out over 133,000 naloxone doses in 1,044 events. Since 2021, the West Virginia nonprofit SOAR WV has coordinated the effort. By coordinating with local groups like Narcotics Anonymous, SOAR has taken off from a two-county pilot into a national movement by 2025.
“There is something magical about knowing that on the same day, people in communities everywhere are connected by the simple belief that every life is worth saving,” declared Sarah Stone, SOAR WV co-director.
Beyond September, SOAR WV has helped communities install more than 100 easy-access naloxone vending boxes and 5,200+ emergency wall boxes that operate year-round alongside training. The program has helped to slash the state’s opioid overdose rates by nearly 50%.
Naloxone Matters
Naloxone is a medication that reverses opioid overdoses by blocking opioid receptors in the brain. It comes as a nasal spray that requires no medical training to administer and has no effect on someone who hasn’t taken opioids. The medication was approved by the FDA 50+ years ago and became available over the counter in 2023. Anyone can buy it without a prescription.
Naloxone works but not if no one has it. People who use drugs, their families and bystanders are often the true first responders in an overdose. Oftentimes, they don’t even know naloxone exists. Free events remove this barrier so that you’ll know how to act should the need arise.
This year’s theme is called “Elevate Harm Reduction” and spotlights syringe programs and drug testing that save lives and reduce disease transmission. The theme arrives amid a difficult funding climate among states. In fact, earlier this year, federal grant restrictions prohibited recipients from using certain harm reduction language and cut funding for supplies that supporters consider life-saving.
“With Save a Life Day’s 2026 theme of promoting harm reduction, we are trying to return some public health sanity to the conversation,” noted Joe Solomon, SOAR WV co-director.
