Only Two Ketamine Products Are FDA Approved

The legitimate picture is narrow. Johnson & Johnson’s Spravato, an esketamine nasal spray, is the only ketamine-based drug approved by the FDA for treatment-resistant depression. Ketalar, a ketamine product from JHP Pharmaceuticals, is approved only as a general anaesthetic.

Everything else being sold as therapeutic ketamine sits outside that approval. That distinction matters because the marketing on these sites borrows the credibility of approved treatment while delivering a product nobody has verified.

Understanding Ketamine and Its Risks

Ketamine is a dissociative anaesthetic. At higher doses it produces detachment from the body and surroundings, which is part of why it is used recreationally. Regular heavy use is associated with tolerance, compulsive use patterns, memory and cognitive problems, and serious bladder and urinary tract damage.

Ketamine is not an opioid, so naloxone does not reverse its effects. It is also frequently taken alongside other substances, and combining it with opioids, alcohol or benzodiazepines raises the risk of dangerous respiratory depression.
