About NA Meetings in Evanston

Narcotics Anonymous is a peer-led fellowship for anyone who wants to stop using drugs, with no dues or fees and no professional counselors running the room. Evanston sits directly on Chicago’s northern border, and its local NA schedule falls under the North Suburbs Area of the Chicagoland Region.

  • NA area: North Suburbs Area, Chicagoland Region of Narcotics Anonymous
  • Meeting formats: Open, beginner
  • Cost: Free, with no dues or membership fees

Finding an NA Meeting in Evanston

The finder above searches nearby communities as well as Evanston itself. That mostly means Chicago, since Evanston borders the city directly rather than sitting a drive away from it like most suburbs do. Glenview, just to the northwest, is the other close option, and the North Suburbs Area’s own committee meets there.

Evanston’s own recorded meeting is open and specifically beginner focused, which makes it a reasonable first stop for someone who has never attended NA before. Chicago’s larger schedule, a short ride away on CTA or Metra, adds open, closed, discussion, and Basic Text and step-study options if the local meeting’s night doesn’t line up with your schedule.

The Chicagoland Region’s 24-hour helpline is 708-848-4884 (Spanish: 708-848-5194), and the state directory covers the rest of Illinois.

Drug Use and Overdose in Cook County

Cook County’s opioid overdose deaths have declined for three years running. The county recorded 1,138 opioid-involved deaths in 2024, and preliminary 2025 figures point to a fourth straight year of decline.

  • 1,138 opioid-involved overdose deaths in Cook County in 2024. Cook County and Chicago joint opioid report, Cook County and Chicago Departments of Public Health with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, 2026.
  • 69,973 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2025 (provisional), down about 14 percent from 2024. CDC, National Center for Health Statistics, provisional 2025 data.

County-level and national figures. City-level overdose data is not separately reported for Evanston.

Treatment Options In and Near Evanston

NA works alongside medical treatment rather than instead of it. Medications for opioid use disorder (methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone) are the evidence-based standard of care and are fully compatible with attending meetings.

Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital (formerly Evanston Hospital, part of the former NorthShore University HealthSystem) is in the city itself and offers behavioral health and substance use treatment. SAMHSA’s FindTreatment.gov lets you search any ZIP code for detox, outpatient, and medication options, and the SAMHSA National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free, confidential, and answered around the clock.

The Illinois Helpline, 1-833-234-6343, can connect callers to the state’s MAR NOW program for a same-day or next-day methadone or buprenorphine appointment. See our guide to addiction treatment options for more on levels of care.

Naloxone and Harm Reduction

Evanston’s own Health and Human Services Department has installed emergency naloxone boxes at several public locations around the city, in partnership with the Evanston Public Library and the Parks and Recreation Department. Each is stocked with naloxone nasal spray and instructions for use.

Illinois’s statewide standing order also lets pharmacies dispense naloxone without an individual prescription, and the state’s Good Samaritan law protects both the person overdosing and the person who calls for help from certain drug-possession charges. The Illinois Helpline, 1-833-234-6343, can point you to additional naloxone and Drug Overdose Prevention Program sites nearby. Learn more on our overdose information page.

Evanston NA Meetings FAQ

Do I have to stop using before I go to a meeting?
No. NA meetings are open to anyone who wants to stop, whether or not they’ve already managed it. Evanston’s own meeting is beginner focused, which makes it a low-pressure first stop.

Can family members attend an NA meeting?
Yes, at open meetings. Evanston’s local meeting is open, so family members and other loved ones are welcome to sit in.

What if there’s no meeting today in Evanston?
The finder searches by proximity, so Chicago’s much larger schedule, just over the city line, usually has something running the same day.

Are there beginner meetings near Evanston?
Yes. Evanston’s own recorded meeting is specifically a beginner meeting, built for people attending for the first time.

What’s the difference between an open and a closed meeting?
Open meetings welcome anyone, including family members and people still deciding if NA is right for them. Closed meetings are for people who identify as wanting to stop using. Evanston’s meeting is open; closed options are available nearby in Chicago.
