NA Meetings in Birmingham

Birmingham is near the center of the state, south of Huntsville and north of the Montgomery. This vibrant southern city is known for a thriving arts and culinary scene. The city boasts a population of near 195,000 and supports one of the deepest Narcotics Anonymous schedules in Alabama.

Groups meet across the metro area on most nights of the week and include all formats. You may find people from smaller towns around Jefferson County at meetings in Birmingham because the city offers more nights groups and more formats than a single town can.

Our full Alabama schedule includes meetings outside Birmingham and statewide. This offers the opportunity to plan for travel and compare your options.

What Happens During a Narcotics Anonymous Meeting?

An NA meeting is a group of people who want to stop using drugs. These meetings are free, do not require that you sign in and do not require that you speak. NA has two large categories of meetings.

Open meetings welcome anyone who’s curious about recovery and how Narcotics Anonymous works. Closed meetings are for people who want to stop using drugs. Within those categories are different formats including a speaker meeting, step study and discussion meeting.

Speaker meetings have one person speaking during the meeting about their experiences with drugs and recovery. A discussion meeting opens up the meeting for questions and discussion around a predetermined topic. A step study group works through NA’s 12 steps in order. This often happens with the help of a sponsor.

While peer support is important to your recovery, it does not substitute for medical treatment. Similar group support is available for families and parents who have children and loved ones who use drugs.

Getting to a Meeting in Birmingham

Birmingham meetings are not centered in one district but instead are spread across the Metro area. A car or rideshare is important to reach your meeting of choice. Online meetings can help fill the gap when the nearest in person option doesn’t fit your schedule, you’re traveling, or you don’t have transportation.

Tuscaloosa and Montgomery also have weekly NA meetings when you live outside the city limits. Either location is a reasonable drive when you cannot find a meeting in Birmingham to meet your needs.

A Meeting Is Typically Not Enough

NA meetings help you stay clean once you’ve stabilized. However, they’re not medical care and are not a substitute for medical treatment. Withdrawal from certain substances is dangerous without the support of a clinician.

Opiate withdrawal should be managed medically and not alone to reduce the potential for dangerous complications. Medication for opioid use disorder can include methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone.

This is a legitimate part of recovery and works with attending NA meetings rather than against it. Speak with your doctor first when you are weighing your withdrawal and detox options.

Where do calls go?

By calling the helpline you agree to the terms of use. We do not receive any commission or fee that is dependent upon which treatment provider a caller chooses. There is no obligation to enter treatment.

Calls to numbers on a specific treatment center listing will be routed to that treatment center. Calls to any general helpline could be forwarded to SAMHSA or a verified treatment provider.

If you wish to connect with non-sponsor centers, you can browse meetings, visit our homepage and browse by state, or visit SAMHSA.
