Overdose deaths have been falling across the country. The CDC’s most recent provisional data show an estimated 69,973 drug overdose deaths nationwide in 2025, down nearly 14 percent from 81,313 in 2024 and the third straight year of decline.

Georgia moved in the same direction, though not quite as steeply: the state recorded 1,663 overdose deaths in 2025, according to CDC data reported in May 2026.

Atlanta is located in Fulton County and home to about 1.1 million people. This is the most populated county in Georgia. County-level details reveal a more specific story than the state figure alone.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s 2024 Annual Report, the most recent available, documented 160 deaths from illicit drug overdose that year, plus 59 more that involved a mix of substances. Fentanyl was the drug identified most often in the office’s death investigations, present in 155 cases, ahead of cocaine (117) and methamphetamine (69).

The Fulton County figure covers the entire county, which the Medical Examiner’s office serves in full, not Atlanta alone.
